Dave Evoy has been the life skills counselor with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program since the fall of 2009. He meets with both the U.S. National Under-17 and Under-18 Teams on a monthly basis to discuss topics related to character development. In this role Evoy emphasizes responsibility and decision making in all areas of a player's life including home, community, school and hockey.
Topics covered in life skills meetings include peer pressure, substance abuse education, healthy relationships and social media. Evoy's monthly meetings provide a safe place for players to discuss situations they may encounter, how to problem solve and ways to develop coping techniques for difficulties that may arise off the ice.
Evoy also communicates regularly with coaches, host families and parents on topics discussed.
